Compare and contrast the portrayal of imperialism in the political cartoon    "the white man’s burden” and the  kipling poem  of the same name.

To provide context, at the end of the 19th century, around 1898-9, the united states was involved with annexing the philippines as part of the expanding imperialism of the u.s. the u.s. had for a long time an isolationist policy, which attempted to prevent involvement in global affairs. the sentiment was changing and presented in both kipling's poem and the political cartoon is the sentiment of the responsibility of the "enlightened" countries of the west to transform the "barbarians" into enlightened and educated souls. pictured in the cartoon is the depiction of moving towards the top of the mountain of the learning and religion of the west, especially the aspect of religion which would transform them into civilized people. kipling is especially critical of the people that should be transformed, depicted in the cartoon as souls needing direction from britain and furthermore from the u.s.
