The front of the new Technology block has large windows. The beams above the windows are made of concrete. They are exposed to a range of temperatures ranging from –20°C to 30°C
When measured at –5°C the beams are each 4.5m long.
If the temperature rises to 20°C over the course of a day, how much will the beam expand?
Fill in the following information:
What is the original temperature? - (t₀) =
What is the final temperature? - (t₁) =
What is the original length? - (L₀) =
What is the coefficient of expansion for Concrete? - (a) =
This will tell us the change in length- (dL)
Now do the calculation, putting these values into the formula.
Change in length = original length x coefficient x (final temp-original temp)
i) Calculate the final length of the beam.
ii) Now calculate the length of the beam at 30°C (i. e the longest length)
iii) Now calculate the length of the panel at -20°C (i. e the shortest length)
