In 2009, Hawaii observed its fiftieth year of statehood. Yet Hawaiians did not celebrate with big parties. There
were no grand parades or dazzling fireworks shows, either. Instead, events were low key. That is because leaders
wanted to be respectful. For many native Hawaiians, becoming a state caused pain and unhappiness. The main
event was a day-long conference. It explored the effects of statehood on tourism, the economy, and business in
the state. Leaders also aired TV and radio ads. These included a series of interviews with citizens. They discussed
their opinions of Hawaii's statehood.
