In modeling the effect of impurity on crystal growth, the following equation was derived: G-GL/ G0-G = 1/KLCm where C is impurity concentration. CL is a limiting growth rate, G0 is the growth rate of the crystal with no impurity present, and KL and m are model parameters. In a particular experiment, G0 = 3.00 times 10-3 mm/min. and GL = 1.80 times 10-3 mm/min. Growth rates are measured for several impurity concentrations C (parts per million, or ppm), with the following results: (For example, when C = 50.0 ppm, G = 2.50 times 10-3 mm/min). Determine KL and m. giving both numerical values and units. A solution is fed to a crystallizer in which the impurity concentration is 475 ppm. Estimate the expected crystal growth rate in (mm/min). Then state why you would be extremely skeptical about this result.

The extremely high temperatures needed to trigger nuclear fusion are proposed to be generated by laser irradiating a spherical pellet of deuterium and tritium fuel of diameter 1.8 mm. (a) determine the maximum fuel temperature that can be achieved by irradiating the pellet with 200 lasers, each producing a power of 550 w. the pellet has an absorptivity 0.3 and emissivity 0.8.

Consider an ordinary, helium-filled party balloon with a volume of 2.2 ft3. the lifting force on the balloon due to the outside air is the net resultant of the pressure distribution exerted on the exterior surface of the balloon. using this fact, we can derive archimedes’ principle, namely that the upward force on the balloon is equal to the weight of the air displaced by the balloon. assuming that the balloon is at sea level, where the air density is 0.002377 slug/ft3, calculate the maximum weight that can be lifted by the balloon. note: the molecular weight of air is 28.8 and that of helium is 4.
