Consider a herd of lemmings running up a hill towards a cliff. Suppose the hillside they are running on is at a 30° incline, the lemmings’ speed is 5 km/h, and that a 1 km/h wind is blowing horizontally towards the cliff. Consider the lead lemming, shown below. Draw the vector representing this lemming’s travel up the hill; draw the vertical and horizontal component vectors as well. Label the direction and magnitude of all three vectors on your sketch. Show all calculations.

Consider what happens at the moment the lemming runs off the edge of the cliff. Sketch the lemming’s run vector and the wind vector. If we combine these vectors, what are the magnitude and direction of the resultant vector? (you can ignore gravity and any other complicating factors here)

Consider what happens 10 seconds after the lemming has run off the cliff. Sketch the lemming’s run vector, the wind vector, and the 98 m/s (5.88 km/h) downward velocity due to gravity (recall, acceleration due to gravity is 9.8 m/s per second). If we combine these vectors, what are the magnitude and direction of the resultant vector? (you can ignore reality and any other complicating factors here).

The management of a supermarket wants to adopt a new promotional policy of giving a free gift to every customer who spends more than a certain amount per visit at this supermarket. the expectation of the management is that after this promotional policy is advertised, the expenditures for all customers at this supermarket will be normally distributed with a mean of $95 and a standard deviation of $20. if the management wants to give free gifts to at most 10% of the customers, what should the amount be above which a customer would receive a free gift?
