As a result of the Smoot-Hawley Tariff, Foreign countries refused to buy American goods and imposed high tariff rates.

The tariff act of 1930 which is also known as Smoot-Hawley tariff act which was implemented in order to protect trade policies that were their during that period of time in United States. This act was presented by Reed Smoot who was member of Senate and Wills C. Hawley who was member of Representatives. This act came into force when President of United States Herbert Hoover signed it and approved it. Tariffs on nearly 2000 imported goods was increased due to this act and that was at an astonishing average of 40 to 48% growth on tariffs. Many historians and economists blamed this tariff as worsening the Great Depression and also contributed in the start of World War-2. Global trade in united States was down by 65% because of this act. United States used to have Characteristics which was of a Traditional economy as 25% of Americans used to do farming but between the period of World War 1, Food prices in united States increased rapidly. Because of these tariffs, People of United States lost everything as stock market crashed and many people lost their jobs. International countries retaliated to the rise on tariffs as they raised tariffs on imported products of United States.

After the creation of Smoot-Hawleyy tariff, other nations who want to export their products to American soil had to pay an additional increase trade payments , which will reduce their profit.

In response to this, many of those countries refused to do businesses with united states unless we eliminate the tariff.
