Availability of food was a problem at Sparta which depends on her slaves and lower class people for her food production. One of their major goals was not availability of food but to produce warriors with required strength and low rate of food consumption.

Therefore, Spartan men ate soup otherwise known as black soup . Boys were given a minimum diet so as to train them not to rely on food to work. But Athens and Greece has a more different diet and could afford good food.
