A single member district is a district in which its representative is voted in by the people of the district. At-large is when representatives are elected by anyone living in a state.

For example in New York's 12th congressional district only people living in that district can vote for the congressperson of that district and the rest of the state is filled with other congressional districts. However in states that practice electing their representative at large like Alaska or Delaware there is only one congressional district and everyone living in that state can vote for their representative to represent their entire state.
