( Plz this is due today! The best answer gets brainiest !) Sentence - Phrase - Word
Read the passage below in which a historian explains how rivers influenced the development of the world’s civilizations. As you read, underline one sentence, one phrase, and one word that you think are most important in the passage.

“One of the common features of ancient history was that many civilizations grew in semiarid* environments near large, flooding, navigable rivers. Examples include Egypt around the Nile River, Mesopotamia along the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, the Indus civilization around the Indus River, and China along the middle reaches of the Yellow River.

Larger rivers meant greater potential wealth, population density, and power for civilizations. But controlling these water resources to benefit human civilizations required great knowledge and physical effort, as well as complex planning directed by a centralized government.”
Adapted from Steven Solomon, Water: The Epic Struggle for Wealth, Power, and Civilization (2010).

*semiarid: an area that gets very little rain

Reflection: Why did you choose the sentence, phrase, and word that you underlined above?

Extension: What do civilizations need today? Your answer could focus on geography or other elements of culture you feel are important.
