a. The communities enforced strict rules and regulations on their members.
b. The living conditions of these communities were worse than the slums.
c. The number of people willing to live in phalanstères was too few to sustain them.

then once you find a topic you like find out how it affected the people of america and what not. (sorry if this feels a bit short changed, history was and never will be one of my strong topics)
