During the British rule , the British government levied tax on the salt which is found to be a basic and essentially necessary thing for Indians.  This made the Indians agitation stronger towards the British government.  Gandhiji decided to break the tax on salt by the satyagraha movement.  The salt satyagraha or Dandi march is said to be the part of  civil disobedience movement.  He started marching to Dandi from sabarmati ashram which is now called Navsari (a place in Gujarat ) with his 72 trusted followers.
