The USSR saw authoritarian rule and communism as the best way of life. The two sides never went to war against each other directly. But they competed over control in Europe - such as the Berlin blockade and Berlin airlift. The also supported opposing sides in conflicts like the Korean War. They also engaged in a massive nuclear arms race against one another.
