Why do you think african americans became so involved in the union war effort?

They may have become involved because they felt they would be looked at differently. By differently, I mean in a more heroic way, especially seeing as they weren’t treated as well at that point in time. As well as that, the fact that they are serving their country may help others see them as proper citizens.
