Tiny Specs of Information
Paleontology is the study of fossils. Fossils are preserved remains of life forms from the past. This evidence of ancient life allows scientists to make observations and draw conclusions about Earth’s past. Some fossils are too small to be seen with the naked eye. Tiny shells, pollen grains, and single-celled plants called algae may all be preserved in the fossil record. Scientists use powerful microscopes to study these microfossils, or microscopic fossils. Despite their miniature size, microfossils, such as fossil pollen, can reveal just as much information as a gigantic fossil dinosaur bone. The study of fossil pollen is called palynology.
