after the death and exile of napoleon bonaparte a ruler of German in April 1814,Britain was able to use was its troops and shops to prosecute wars with the United States .

when the British arrived at the white house they found president James maadison and his first lady dolly had already fled to safety in Maryland.

the brits invaded and sacked Washington DC. James Madison n his cabinet members already left when the brits arrived. the soldiers under command by their generals burnt down important bldgs like the Capitol, Treasury n the White House. Dolly, James' wife, was still in DC and ordered evacuation of the WH before the brits burnt it down.
