A heart transplant is surgery to remove the diseased heart from a person and replace it with a healthy one from an organ donor. To remove the heart from the donor, two or more healthcare providers must declare the donor brain-dead. Recent figures show that 75% of heart transplant patients live at least five years after surgery. Nearly 85% return to work or other activities they previously enjoyed. Many patients enjoy swimming, cycling, running, or other sports. Generally, most patients do not report a lot of pain after heart transplant surgery. The incision does cause pain or discomfort when you cough. Avoid highly salted foods and consume high sodium processed foods such as cured, smoked and canned meats, cheeses, frozen meals and pizzas, and regular canned foods in moderation after a heart transplant.
