According to the traditions, the Hebrews were enslaved by the Egyptians. They were treated very badly and they wanted to break free. Moses came to be the men that had the courage to go against the pharaoh, and to lead the Hebrews out of Egypt and into the promised land and freedom. According tot he legend, Moses managed to do this, and he did it in a miraculous manner, by moving the waters of the Jordan River, creating a pathway through it so the people can pass and save themselves from the Egyptian army, and than the water fell back on place again.

Historically though, it is thought that Moses is a mythological character. There are no records whatsoever in the Egyptian writings about such a men, nor in the writings of the other surrounding civilizations. Real or not, Moses remained to be an important character in all of the Abrahamic religions.
