Society is the enemy of individuality.

Emerson believed that society was a threat to individuality. He believed that every person had an individual spark of god. He believed that each person had a guiding voice that told him or her how to live his life (like a conscience). When people are ruled by a larger society that acts for all, it limits what an individual can do on his own. In effect, society makes it impossible for a man to think on his own, and therefore act on his own.
