A refugee is a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster.

Beyond the Book: Research Project: A Refugee’s Perspective

Select a specific group of refugees to research.
Research news articles, podcasts, and/or interviews to learn about their refugee experience.
Find a refugee with an interesting story or perspective.
Learn everything you can about that person and his/her experience.
Write a series of first-person journal entries in verse that explore his/her experience as a refugee.
Use your imagination to fill in missing details.
Turn in 5 journal entries written in first-person perspective. Your journal entries can include details about your refugee's life prior to fleeing to his or her home, why they needed to leave in the first place, how they went about it, where they fled to and why, and how their life changed after becoming a refugee in a new land.
