In "Fish Cheeks", by Amy Tan, what the author describes in order to create a contrast between cultures is the behavior of her relatives. The narrator is fourteen, she has a crush on the Minister's son. The whole minister's family is invited to Christmas Eve dinner. She is afraid of what they would think about their "shabby Chinese Christmas", their noisy relatives and their Chinese food. During dinner, her relatives were noisy and they licked the end of the chopsticks and then dipped them into the dozen plates that were in the table.
