Indeed, Claudius could be considered a double for Hamlet in as much as that he is a cunning schemer, who is able to usurp the throne with his tactics; even managing to forge the facts about King Hamlet's death, and make everybody believe in the accidental fatality. Claudius' mastery of rhetoric discretion is quickly shown to the audience, as he is able in just a few lines to appear as a grieving brother, whose feelings of the wisest sorrow are shared by both him and the Danish court as they mourn together his dear brother's death. By using the royal “we”, he is able to assert his kingly authority while at the same time associating the court to his dubious accession to the imperial throne of Denmark. Furthermore, his shrewd handling of the impetuous young Fortinbras reveals him to be a man of cerebral action, in direct opposition to both Prince Fortinbras and combative King Hamlet. Indeed, instead of entering in overt war against him, he prefers to suppress his belligerence by diplomatic means, addressing the elder King of Norway via a letter delivered by ambassadors Cornelius and Voltimand, while at the same time secretly preparing the Kingdom for war.

In this manner, Claudius and Hamlet have much in common in the meditative quality of their action reflexes, being both different and alike in so far as Hamlet is not a scheming murderer as King Claudius but a scheming avenger for his own murdered father. In scene two of act four, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are rhetorically suppressed very quickly by Prince Hamlet, who informs Rosencrantz that as the “son of a King he does not even listen to the demands of a foolish sponge”, asserting his towering nobility over both of them. Claudius will try to use them to send prince Hamlet to his death in England, but Hamlet will still outsmart them during their sleep, and have them executed in his place. At this point, one question arises: how is it that Hamlet, who is presented by the author to the audience as a figure of inaction throughout the majority of the play is able to save his own life from an execution in England? It is obvious that he is as cunning and ruthless as Claudius if he has to. Furthermore, his severe subduing of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern for their breach of protocol with regards to his royal persona is very much imbued with a sense of class-superiority that Claudius would not disapprove of.
