Iman was only 12 years old when her mother was found lying over the kitchen sink, a bottle of whiskey in her hand. She never knew her mother was capable of such harm to her own body. When she was admitted to the hospital, the doctors told her grandmother that she was so intoxicated, that you could get drunk off her blood. Iman was devastated at the sight of her mother on her deathbed. At that moment, she decided she never wanted her children to feel the same pain. She was going to make sure her children were able to dive into adventure and have a memorable childhood.

When Iman was 18, she met the love of her life. His name was Harden. Harden and Iman finished their studies at university before getting married. At age 22, they were engaged to marry and got married 4 months later. They began to backpack across Europe together for years. When Iman was 24, she was pregnant with twin girls. She remembered her promise to herself, and kept it.

Her daughters, Aiya and Alaya had the kindest mother anyone could ask for. Iman and Harden didn’t stop their adventures in France, where Iman gave birth, but traveled the Netherlands, England, Australia, The Americas, Asiawith her daughters all before their 18th birthday. Iman never let her past or her mother’s past drag her down. When she was 38, Iman and Harden Adopted a young boy from China. His name was Boqin, and he had visited Japan, Senegal, and Turkey by the time he turned 2 years old.  

Iman was able to turn her life around with one memory of her mother, and one promise from decades ago. She was determined to give her family a stable life and not let her past define her. Iman died at 88 years old, her final words being “I never broke my promise.”
