Which type of creature does the narrator find inside his prison? ghosts rats cockroaches spiders

In the Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allan Poe, the narrator is a prisoner who is exploring the place where he is, during this he finds rats, that become a very important part of the story, because he uses his clever intellect to escape from an imminent death through using the rats' natural instincts.

i don't really know the circumstances. i personally think not due to it not being fair for all parties and how hated i'd become if i thought it was a good thing.
