(01.01, 01.02 MC) Read the story Bruno and the Race:
It was a bright, sunny day, and the entire penguin colony was out fishing. Bruno, a young penguin, got up on the highest iceberg and let out a
huge squawk. Everyone turned, looked up, and stared. He shouted as loud as he could, "I challenge Jeanette and Trevor to a race!" Bruno could
hear everyone snickering, saying he was too small and would never win. Bruno yelled again, "I am serious! If I lose, I will give 100 fish to the
winner!" That amount of fish is three full days of hard work for Bruno.
Jeanette and Trevor were the fastest penguins in the entire colony. They would slide and jump all over the ice while the rest of the penguins
tried to keep up. No one could beat them, and most had tried. The only penguin that had not challenged them was Bruno. He was a very small
penguin, and no one thought he was fast enough, so he never tried to challenge them, until now. Bruno had been practicing his racing
technique every evening. He was ready to show the colony his newfound confidence.
They waddled up to the starting line. Jeanette, Trevor, and Bruno made eye contact with each other as they stretched. The colony counted
down, "Three! Two! One! Go!" The three penguins took off. Jeanette and Trevor were in the lead, but as they approached the finish line, they
saw a flash of black and white fly past them! Bruno used the last jump to give him the speed he needed to win the race. Using the jumps for
speed was Bruno's new technique to win races. His size didn't matter. Bruno shared his new skill with the other penguins in the colony. Bruno
wanted to help them become faster so that everyone had a chance at winning races. The entire colony thanked Bruno, and everyone was sorry
for doubting him

Read the passage from a vindication of the rights of woman. that the society is formed in the wisest manner, whose constitution is founded on the nature of man, strikes, in the abstract, every thinking being so forcibly, that it looks like presumption to endeavour to bring forward proofs; though proof must be brought, or the strong hold of prescription will never be forced by reason; yet to urge prescription as an argument to justify the depriving men (or women) of their natural rights, is one of the absurd sophisms which daily insult common sense. does wollstonecraft maintain an objective tone in the passage? yes, because she uses objective language such as “society is formed in the wisest manner.” yes, because she uses objective language such as “it looks like presumption to endeavor.” no, because she uses subjective language such as “though proof must be brought, or the strong hold.” no, because she uses subjective language such as “absurd sophisms which daily insult common sense.”

Study the editorial cartoon mars probe by mike keefe. how does the alien with the baseball bat contribute to the effectiveness of the political cartoon? it suggests that aliens are like people because they play baseball, a human sport. it uses humor to show that unknown factors keep damaging the probes humans send. it shows how to cope with the surface of mars, which is rocky and full of craters. it exaggerates the size of the bat in relation to the mars probe in the cartoon.
