(4) The sun was just coming up as we pulled onto the road. (5) The drive across the valley to Yosemite takes about three hours, and there's not much to see. (6) It's mostly just straight flat highway through mile after mile of tomato fields. (7) I told my dad that someone must like ketchup more than I do. (8) He laughed. (9) But then he reminded me that I was rather fond of spaghetti and pizza sauce. (10) I couldn't argue with that. (11) When we got to our campground, it was already crowded. (12) Nonetheless, by some miracle, there were one open right across from the showers. (13) Someone must have just left the campgrounds. (14) We grabbed the spot, jumped out of the car and breathed in the mountain air. (15) After piling the food on the picnic table, we got to work setting up the tent. (16) That done, we built a fire in the grate and roasted hot dogs for an early lunch. (17) That afternoon, the whole next day, and the morning of the day after that, we hiked and swam and canoed during the day and roasted hot dogs and hamburgers and marshmallows in the evenings. (18) And we talked. (19) My dad told me stories of things he did when he was my age and what it was like growing up back then. (20) I told him the things I wanted to do with my life. (21) On the drive home, we were both pretty quiet. (22) We were tired. (23) But it was a good kind of tired.
