Use what you have learned about osmosis to explain the results of the following experiment: A student placed an egg in a cup of vinegar for 24 hours and the hard shell of the egg dissolved. The mass of the egg without a shell is 80 g. Carefully, the egg was placed in a thick corn syrup solution. After 24 hours, the student measured the mass of the egg and recorded that the mass had changed and is now 56 g. The egg appeared shrunken. The egg is then placed in a cup of distilled water (water with all minerals removed) and allowed to sit overnight. After 24 hours the mass of the egg is recorded as 92 g. The egg appears swollen and about to burst. Using complete sentences, describe the changes using the terms osmosis, isotonic, hypertonic and hypotonic.
