HNO3(aq) + Mg(OH)2(aq) —>

During the reaction is the solution the two compounds dissociate as follows:

HNO3 —> H^+ + NO3^-

Mg(OH)2 —> Mg^2+ + OH^-

Combining the above equation we have:

H^+NO3^- + Mg^2+OH^-

Note: Mg will always displace H from solution because Mg is higher than H in the activity series of metals.

In the above equation, there will be a double displacement or replacement as shown below:
