Why does a population that experiences exponential growth have a high chance of having a population crash?

The resources (food and water) needed for a species to survive may not be being produced at the same rate the population is growing. This could lead to starvation and death in the form of a population crash. Example: too many coyotes being born when there is not enough rabbits for them to eat.
