Nitrogen is said to be an essential one in the atmosphere but even though it exists as inactive in the atmosphere it is converted as usable nitrogen by the cycle.  The nitrogen cycle is considered to be one of the important factors for the survival of the plants. Nitrogen is not used directly in photosynthesis by the plants whereas it is converted to nitrate by the help of nitrogen-fixing bacteria in the soil.  Thus the nitrogen fixation process converts nitrogen into ammonium ions and then it is used by the plants.
