Ofigure out the outcome of a cross, set up a punnett square.
a. put the gametes of one parent at the top and those of the other on the left. to determine the allele(s) in each gamete for a given genotype, set up a systematic way to list all the possibilities. (remember, each gamete has one allele of each gene.) note that there are 2n possible types of gametes, where n is the number of gene loci that are heterozygous. for example, an individual with genotype aabbcc would produce 23 = 8 types of gametes. write the genotypes of the gametes in circles above the columns and to the left of the rows.
b. fill in the punnett square as if each possible sperm were fertilizing each possible egg, making all of the possible offspring. in a cross of aabbcc × aabbcc, for example, the punnett square would have 8 columns and 8 rows, so there are 64 different offspring; you would know the genotype of each and thus the phenotype. count genotypes and phenotypes to obtain the genotypic and phenotypic ratios. because the punnett square is so large, this method is not the most efficient.

1. variations in a population of moths allow for some of its members to be able to adapt to environmental changes. the better adapted of the moths will be able to survive the change and thus prevail as the “fittest” of the species. (a) describe three mechanisms in which variation can occur within a species population. (b) explain which mechanism or mechanisms would be responsible for the survival of a population of peppered moths better than white moths in an environment affected by industrial soot. justify your answer.

On a recent expedition to a remote region of northern canada, scientists uncovered skeletal remains from about 100,000 years ago. surprisingly, all the skeletal remains, which included many species from differing biological families and spanned about two thousand years, showed evidence of experiencing temperatures in excess of 1000 degrees fahrenheit (or 538 degrees celsius). which of the following, if true, best explains the apparent paradox between the cold environment and the evidence of the bones experiencing hot temperatures? (a) chemical changes that naturally occur during the process of decay in only one north canadian species produce the same evidence of the species' skeletons being exposed to hot temperatures as the expedition scientists found. (b) a little over 103,000 years ago, a large fire is known to have occurred in northern canada. (c) strong evidence exists that as early as 70,000 years ago, homo sapiens around the world relied heavily on fire to cook animals. (d) in the same expedition and in roughly the same layer of excavation, scientists found rudimentary wood cutting and hunting tools used by early humans.

Cladistics is a way of classifying organisms by examining the characteristics of their ancestors and descendants and depicting the relationships in a cladogram. which of the following best describes a challenge in classifying organisms this way? a. there are millions of species on earth, and a cladogram is not a practical means for classifying all of them. b. it is impossible to tell which organisms are most closely related to each other using a cladogram. c. cladograms are detail-oriented and do not provide a useful understanding of evolutionary relationships. d. there is a limited number of ways to organize the information, so most cladograms end up looking very similar.
