In metal engraving, the grooves are made on a metal plate (usually copper) with a steel instrument called a burin. The ink is then rubbed into the grooves, the surfaces are wiped clean and the plate is placed in a press to transfer the notched pattern to the paper. Shapes can be modeled on very thin lines to create nuances, which does not happen in woodcut. This technique flourished in the early 16th century with Dürer, whose use of the burin was so sophisticated that, with the copper plate, it achieved light and volume effects very close to those achieved by the Dutch in the oil painting and the Italians in the frescoes.
