Ruff, ruff, ruff...what is this place and what is wrong with these people? They have 4 other dogs, why in the world do they want me too? The lady and the man are quite friendly and the boy just wants to pet my head, but that girl only wants me to stay in her room and snuggle with her. I don't want to just snuggle! I'm a puppy, I want to run and roll in the grass. Hey, where are the other 4 dogs? They must be outside because I don't see them following the lady and pawing at the man for attention. I run to the back door made of total glass, so I can see the backyard. I was right! There they are! I begin to yelp and whine so the boy will let me out to play, but he doesn't do it. He tells me that I'm too small to go out with the other dogs, so he has to pick me up and take me out there. I'm not a baby is what I'm thinking, but not so fast...the other 4 dogs come charging at me full speed. They're like speedy cannons being shot on the enemy. I begin to shake and worry. The boy, Tyler, knows this and he picks me up again. He then takes me and the other dogs into a grassy area. The other dogs, they call Owen, Cooper, Tootsie, and Elvis, run and run as if they're circling a track. I WANT TO RUN TOO! PUT ME DOWN! And just as if Tyler read my mind- he does! My paws are on the grass and I'm free to go. As the other dogs run, I jump on the end of the line and follow along. My little legs won't let me keep up, but I try hard. Then the mommy lady comes out and yells, "COOKIE TIME!" I follow the others in and we each get a chocolate chip cookie followed by a chewy chip. This place is great! I'm so glad they brought me home to live here.

Slowly swimming towards recovery, california's sea otter numbers holding steady posted on september 22, 2014 usgs.gov read the following passage: when sea otters want to rest, they wrap a piece of kelp around their body to hold themselves steady among the rolling waves. likewise, california's sea otter numbers are holding steady against the many forces pushing against their population recovery, according to the latest field survey led by federal, state, aquarium, and university scientists. since the 1980s, u.s. geological survey scientists have calculated a population index each year for the southern sea otter—enhydra lutris nereis—a species federally listed as threatened. the annual range-wide field survey collects data on this protected marine mammal on behalf of the u.s. fish and wildlife service. trends in population index reported by usgs for southern sea otters in california. data are shown for independent otters, nonpups, and all otters for mainland california, san nicolas island, and rangewide from 2012 onward. the mainland all otters line increases gradually from 1990 to 2014 from less than 1800 to about 2800. the mainland independents mirror the all otter population curve at slightly lower numbers. the san nicolas island population begins at about 18 in 1992 and climbs to about 65 in 2014. why does the author include the chart in the article? to provide a comparison of changes in the two groups of sea otter populations to provide a depiction of the variety of sea otter populations in the area to provide a list of the groups of ecosystems that were included in the study to provide a visual representation of how sea otter populations have changed
