What’s the origin of basque language?

The origins of the Basque language are unknown, because it, or its immediate precursors, have been spoken in the region where it is still spoken since before written records. It is known that Aquitanian, the language of south western Gaul and north eastern Iberia at the time the Romans arrived was related to Basque (the Aquitanians were one of the three parts that Julius Caesar tells us Gaul was divided into), but before that, it’s mostly guesswork. One theory suggests that proto-Basque was brought into the region by the first Neolithic farmers, but there’s no real evidence one way or the other
