Preterite tense is one of the two past tenses used in Spanish.  It is used in situations where the action that took place had a definitive end, and was not a continuous action.  You will have to have conjugations memorized, but identifying certain parts of the sentence can help you figure out which conjugation to use.

The verb is ayudar and the subject is Juan.  Juan is a singular person, so the appropriate conjugation of ayudar is ayudó.

For the rest, identify the subject and predicate, and use those to identify the correct conjugation.

Mamá = ella; conjugation of barrer for the subjects ella/el/usted = barrió
