Thailand was the country that proposed a free-trade with ASEAN countries to foster economic cooperation. This is known as the ASEAN Free Trade Area or AFTA and was agreed upon by its six original members of -- Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. It was first proposed by then Thai Prime Minister Anand Panyarachun during the 24th ASEAN ministerial meeting held in Bangkok in July 1991. Its objective was to liberalize inter-ASEAN trade.
