They believed that God appointed women as stewards of the land. Women had higher regard in Iroquois clan as they have raised children, they held property and hereditary leadership was passing through their lines. The best representation of the higher status of women in Iroquois clan was through figure of Clan Mother who appointed leaders and had the right to strip them of their leadership.
