Aversive conditioning. Aversive conditioning involves forming an association with a behavior which stimulates the individual not to engage in the behavior becuase of the unpleasantness of the association. For example, an individual who wished to quit smoking might apply an extremely foul tasting substance to all of their cigarrettes. This bad taste would provide an unpleasant stimulus which the individual would associate with problem behavior of smoking.
