How might the mountain ranges of italy have affected people's lives in acient time?

Because of the mountainous topography, the ranges would affect italy by making it more difficult to travel  to and fro rome. it may be considered that the mountainous geography stranded small communities in italy, allowing minor contact with rome. although advancements in the roman's technological inventions were bound to change this obstacle.
