According to erik erikson, individuals pass through eight stages in which a "crisis" occurs. as the crisis is resolved, a virtue is achieved.

All people pass through developmental stages. During these stages, one of two outcomes can occur, based upon how the person resolves the crisis involved. With a positive resolution, the person grows and develops in a positive manner: otherwise, negative emotions and concepts about the self can take place.
