The Egyptians kept records of the births and deaths of the sacred calves. They did not record that any calves died when Cambyses invaded.

Herodotus may have believed the story because, as a Greek, he considered the Persians his enemies. He saw Cambyses’s invasions as cruel. He heard many stories about Cambyses insulting his subjects or their beliefs.
