We heard that the Germans are beginning some heavy attack. All we could do was dig in and wait. …It was a nightmare of muddy roads, bitter cold and heavy fog. Fresh snow covered fields of land mines and hard, frozen ground made digging foxholes a nightmare. The forest looked like a Christmas card, but it was agony all the way. I looked out across the field from my snow-covered foxhole. The quiet was shattered by German artillery and guns, and the trees around us exploded as shells rained down.
