John Locke was an English philosopher and physician, considered the "father of liberalism." Locke was particularly important to social contract theory (the idea that the people and the government have an implicit contract between them). He was extremely influential during the Enlightenment, particularly in the work of Voltaire, Rousseau and the Founding Fathers of the United States.

Locke discussed in his work the idea of a "social contract," as well as the concept of "natural rights" and the limits of government (most often centered on the protection of property). However, he did not discuss the right of people to overthrow an unfair government. He did, nevertheless, influence other writers who discussed this topic, in a "Lockean" way.
