harry s. truman, the thirty-third president of the united states, was born in lamar, missouri, on may 8, 1884. his family moved several times when he was young. they remained in missouri, though. truman graduated from high school in independence, missouri. truman loved to read. as a child, he was very proud that he had read every single book in the independence public library. he was also talented at playing the piano. he wanted to attend college right after finishing high school, but his family could not afford it.

when he was young, truman had several jobs. he worked for a railroad construction company. then, he worked for two kansas city banks. after that, he returned to his father run the family farm. truman was a very hard worker.

truman was an army national guard captain during world war i. after the war, he served as a judge in missouri until 1934, when he ran for and won a seat in the united states senate.

truman remained a senator until 1944, when franklin delano roosevelt asked if he would run for vice president. roosevelt won the election, so truman became vice president. a few months later, roosevelt passed away. harry s. truman became the president of the united states. he later said of this event, “i felt like the moon, the stars, and all the planets had fallen on me.”

truman was president during a difficult time in u. s. history. he worked to reduce the unemployment rate in the country and to make sure that people had safe, affordable housing. in 1950, he and his advisers agreed that the u. s. must get involved when south korea was invaded by the north korean army.

in 1953, truman retired. he and his wife, elizabeth, returned to the house in independence that they had previously shared with elizabeth's mother. he spent the rest of his life pleasantly. he wrote his autobiography and delivered many speeches. he took lots of long walks. truman lived a long and important life.
