Why did most northern voters support lincoln and want to continue the war?

Many of the Northern voters happened to be against slavery, which was what Lincoln promised to end if he became president. They wished for the war to continue because the focus of it was to free the slaves whom were trapped in the south, knowing that they could win the battle in the end.
