At that time the trade was basically made by artisans and farmers and it was not uncommon for them to create a type of "organization" to improve the relationship of their businesses. The associations formed by professional and independent artisans, on equal terms, which emerged in the Lower Middle Ages (12th to 15th centuries), designed to protect their interests and maintain the privileges they received, were called guilds or craft corporations.
