1. He was a tactical strategist who defeated sometimes greatly superior forces by cunning, imagination, and lateral thought. In what is now Iraq, he achieved his greatest success at the Battle of Gaupamela in 331 BC.

2. The Greek language was also a powerful weapon in Alexander the Great's arsenal. There were hundreds of small spoken languages prior to the conquest of his empire; when he imposed the use of Greek, it established a shared language that aided the expansion of civilization, trade, and hegemony throughout the conquered lands.
