Story: The actions of European powers caused lasting harm in western Africa. Even after countries in the region won their independence, they have continued to struggle with conflicts between groups of people in the region, as well as economic problems. Still, the region has made recent progress, achieving economic growth and more stable governments. Across the region, conditions are improving, and people are receiving better care, getting better educations, and finding more opportunities.

When Central and eastern Africa colonies won their independence, most new countries had no choice but to keep the borders that Europeans had established. In one or more paragraphs, explain why this might have caused problems?
