They argued that the abolition of slavery should be done gradually, by legal means and through religious and political pressure. An additional reason for disagreement was the role of women in the abolitionist movement. While Garrison advocated sharing with them the responsibility of the organization, other anti-slavery believed that women were inferior to men. Fruit of all these tensions, James Birney separated and in 1839 he constituted the Liberty Party, which was the first anti-slavery party in the United States. The Tappan brothers, meanwhile, founded in 1840 the American and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society, closed to the participation of women.
