Because he personifies what we hold dearest about the concept of being human. He is a burning beacon in the night that we can all aspire to every single day in the constant battle to overcome our personal weaknesses and selfishness.

I’m not American, so I’m in little danger of placing the man on an unfair pedestal. He’s one of the most inspiring human beings that’s ever lived not because he was born with an astonishing gift of tactical thinking, or an abundance of charisma - he had neither and that’s why he’s so special. Anyone can be born with those gifts.

Washington was an ordinary man of extraordinary courage, right thinking and determination. He often said that he didn’t have the skills needed to be in his position, that it should be someone else, but there was no one else better and so he pushed and pushed for what he knew had to be done. He willingly gave up his fortune and health, and to fight a battle the rest of the world said was impossible.

He encouraged mercy in victory, and dignity and grit in defeat. He turned down the ultimate power of a king. That is itself is almost unheard of in the history of our species. All because he knew it was wrong, and Washington fought his heart out for what was right.

He wasn’t the most gifted, but he was the one of the greatest.
