In 1896, a black man named Homer Plessy sat in a train car for whites only. He did this intentionally to challenge segregation. His case, Plessy v. Ferguson, made it to the Supreme Court. The court ruled that segregation was, in fact, constitutional. The ruling held that segregation was legal as long as there were separate but equal options for black and white people. This set a precedent that would remain in place for almost 60 years. In reality, the options for black people were usually of much lower quality, and in 1954 the concept of âseparate but equalâ was completely overturned. The following year, in 1955, a black woman named Rosa Parks made history in Alabama when she refused to give up her seat to a white passenger.
Based on the passage, how would you best explain Homer Plessy's reasoning for sitting in a white train car? *
14 points
A. to challenge the legality of segregation

Asociologist wants to study a culture that occurs in some womenâs prisons: âstate families,â in which individual prisoners take on certain roles within a group of like-minded prisoners. there is previous evidence that younger prisoners will use older inmates who play the roles of grandparents as a resource before they will turn to staff for and advice. the lieutenant in charge of a dorm of long-term prisoners offers to gather volunteers to speak to the researcher and also offers to vouch for the integrity of the researcher. the use of this staff is: a valid use of a statistical technique referred to âsnowball samplingâ wherein the inclusion of the first subject leads to the recruitment of another one subject.a useful tactic in obtaining a sample of prisoners who both meet the criteria and who will be honest with the researcher.wrong and is prohibited; subject selection needs to be free from intervention by prison authorities or prisoners.acceptable only when the researcherâs irb grants a special waiver.
